IP blacklist and abuse: protect your network’s reputation

Protect your IP reputation and keep services usable. Learn the difference between abuse reports and blacklisting, with practical prevention steps.

Keep your addresses useful for your customers

IP reputation affects whether other services accept traffic from your network. Responding to an abuse report early helps you protect deliverability and avoid repeated disruption.

Understand the report

An abuse report flags suspected misuse of an address. A blocklist entry means a specific list has classified that IP for its users’ filtering decisions. They are different signals: an abuse report does not automatically mean a blocklist entry, and a listing’s meaning depends on the list.

Work toward a lasting resolution

  1. Check the exact IP and list. For Spamhaus, use its IP and Domain Reputation Checker and read the explanation for that entry.
  2. Investigate the affected service, account and outbound traffic. Stop the activity behind the report and correct compromised or misconfigured systems.
  3. Follow that list’s removal instructions after resolving the cause. Keep the report and remediation details together so your team can track the result.

Prevent the next interruption

Restrict outbound port 25 where direct mail delivery is unnecessary. Monitor unusual traffic and investigate abuse reports promptly. For mail services, check the sending configuration and the relevant list’s guidance rather than treating every listing alike.

Bring the IP, report and actions already taken to LARUS support. We can help you work through the next step and protect the address service your customers depend on.
