Continuous Allocation vs Prioritized Geographic Registrations

Watch the video here:

Introduction

When requesting IP addresses, you have two main options:

  • Continuous Allocation – A larger, single block of IPs.
  • Prioritized Geographic Registration – Smaller blocks, but pre-registered in the desired location.

This tutorial explains the differences and helps you choose the best option for your needs.

Continuous Allocation: One Large Block

  • You receive a single, continuous range of IPs that fits your request.
  • However, the geolocation may not match your preferred country.
  • You must announce the IP and wait for geolocation updates, which can take a month.
  • Best for cloud providers or businesses where IP continuity is more important than location.

Prioritized Geographic Registration: Location-Ready IPs

  • IPs are allocated based on location rather than size.
  • You receive multiple smaller blocks (e.g., /18s or /20s instead of a single /17).
  • These IPs are geolocation-ready, ensuring users access the correct local content.
  • Best for end-user services like streaming, where correct geolocation is critical.

Which Option Should You Choose?

  • For cloud services or centralized management → Choose Continuous Allocation.
  • For end-user applications (Netflix, YouTube, business networks) → Choose Prioritized Geographic Registration.
