IP-Geolocation is known as the method of locating a smart device with an IP address, when the device is connected to the Internet and holds an IP address, it can be physically put on a map. The only drawback for this is that the device in question is able to connect to the Internet through certain way, nearly anything in world now can be found in one way or another by geolocation. This enables one to find the longitude and latitude of the system and position its location on a map. The range of the IP-based geolocation is accurate to the city level, while the GPS offers accuracy to one metre.

Geolocation databases act as the basis for geolocation to operate in the modern world, and although the precision of the coordinates can differ from database to database, they typically depend on the degree of granularity of the details. For most of the databases, API will be be provided to the developers, this makes the developers able to communicate to databases and use information offered by them. One of the most known API is W3C Geolocation produced by World Wide Web Consortium. The objective of this API is to collect geographical data in a standardized way; this method has gave birth to a lot of different modern day technologies through which this information can be gathered.

Geolocation systems have not been and are not intended to be harmful. In fact, they are very useful in many ways to many of the industries and organisations that use them. Services are used in legal and important business activities in a wide range of sectors, including banking, telecommunications, travel, hospitality, entertainment and law enforcement. Geolocation of IP address is also used in the detection of online fraud. Businesses that offer service and product electronically, credit card processors, and online payment companies use geolocation to avoid fraudulent activity.
