How to Get IP Address

date Published: Last Updated: Author: LARUS Editorial Team

The function of IP address is to allow the device to send and receive information across the network. There are two types of IP addresses which are IPv4 and IPv6. The main difference between them is IPv4 address is exhausted and IPv6 is planned to replace IPv4 with its larger space. There are 2 methods to get the IP address depending on your need.

2 Methods to Get IP address

  1. Local Internet Service Provider (ISP)
If you are going to use the IP address for personal use or business network, you can request IP address from the local internet service provider. They are managing IP addresses and can grant you access to the internet.

  2. Regional Internet Registry (RIR)
If you are an internet service provider or running a large-scale business, the methods above is not suitable for you. You will need to apply from the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) that is servicing your regions.

Regional Internet Registry (RIR) is an organization that manages the allocation and registration of Internet number resources within a region of the world. However, the IPv4 address is exhausted and there is no more IPv4 address from RIR. Hence, you can only apply for IPv6 address. Below is the list of 5 RIR:

    • AFRINIC (Africa)

    • ARIN (North America)

    • APNIC (Asia Pacific)

    • LACNIC (Latin and South America)

    • RIPE NCC (Europe and eastern/northern Asia)

IPv4 address is harder to get in 2022

2 reasons are causing this issue. First, the IPv4 address is exhausted because all the IPv4 address has been fully delegated from RIR. It is very hard to find an unused IPv4 address on the market now. Next, since unused IPv4 address is limited, the IPv4 market is very competitive and causing the price of unused IPv4 addresses is increasing yearly.

However, you will still be able to get IPv4 addresses with another friendly method which is leasing IPv4 addresses. The advantages of IPv4 leasing are the price is cheaper, faster process compared to buying IPv4 address that takes more than a month, and so on. You can learn more about lease IPv4 address here.

Choose the method that best suit your need
