What is a Class C IP address?
Class C is the familiar name for the third range in the old classful IPv4 system. It described networks intended for a smaller number of hosts than Class A or Class B. In modern network conversations, people often use “Class C” to mean a /24 IPv4 block.
That shorthand is useful when planning capacity, but it is not the way today’s networks are allocated. Modern networks use CIDR prefixes, such as /24, /23 or /25, to size a network around the actual service requirement.
Class C range, default mask and usable capacity
In the classful model, Class C runs from 192.0.0.0 to 223.255.255.255. Its traditional default subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, which is a /24 prefix.
A /24 contains 256 IPv4 addresses. In a conventional subnet, 254 are normally available for hosts because one address identifies the network and one is reserved for broadcast. The addresses you can deploy depend on the exact prefix, routing design and service arrangement.

Is Class C still relevant with CIDR?
Yes, as a widely understood shortcut. The technical decision today is the prefix length and the routing plan. CIDR lets an operator use a block that fits the network instead of forcing every design into one of five historic classes.
For example, a /25 is smaller than a /24, while a /23 doubles the address count. This gives an ISP, hosting provider or cloud platform a much better way to match IPv4 capacity to customer demand, growth and routing policy.
The label still matters because customers and network teams search for it. The implementation matters because your applications need the right capacity, reliable reachability and a plan for what happens as usage grows.
